Tropical Storm Idalia will dump heavy rains on Georgia

The Gist:

Torrential rain and storms are brewing. As Tropical Storm Idalia inches closer, you’re going to want to pack that umbrella and be careful on roads that are known to flood in heavy rain.

What Happened?

Scattered showers and bursts of thunder aren’t just passing through; they’re sticking around for most of the week. This morning, the skies opened up but will simmer down by mid-morning, only to return with a vengeance this afternoon. It isn’t just water falling from the sky that we have to contend with, flash floods and wind damage are also on the menu.

The Forecast:

  • Today and Tonight: Localized heavy rainfall and potential flash floods
  • Tuesday: Heavy rain mainly in north Georgia, with strong wind gusts
  • Wednesday: Southeast Georgia will get the worst of it, with 1 to 3 inches of rain causing localized flooding

Why It Matters:

The primary concern here is flash flooding, especially in low-lying areas.

What’s Next?

As Tropical Storm Idalia nears, expect the worst of it to hit southeast Georgia by Wednesday. If you live in that neck of the woods, now would be a good time to review your flood safety plans.
