Below is a message from Butts County Sheriff Gary Long in response to the addition of speed detection cameras to Jackson school zones. In the message that was posted on social media, he explains why he is against such cameras.
It has been brought to my attention that speed detection cameras are being placed inside the City of Jackson, in school zones.
I have received numerous calls and complaints about the installment of these cameras and I want everyone to know that I have no knowledge of this, nor do I support this. As long as I am your Sheriff, I will never support speed detection cameras. Allow me to elaborate.
#1 – 8 years ago, I sold a vehicle and just a few months ago, I received a citation from Spalding County for speeding in a truck that I no longer own and haven’t driven in 8 years. I am also aware of many individuals who have received citations for speeding in a school zone, outside of school hours.
#2 – I believe the people of this county pay enough taxes and I do not believe in taxation through citations. I will explain further in #4.
#3- As Sheriff, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Georgia. It is my opinion that a third-party entity mailing citations for speeding, when not sworn in by my office, is unconstitutional.
#4 – Since taking the office of Sheriff, I have been approached by several companies that provide speed detection cameras and their sales pitch is always that they can generate over $1 million a year in citation revenue. They never express that it would reduce accidents or provide safety to the community. As I stated earlier, it is my job to support and defend the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of Georgia and my office will never be used as a revenue generating office. My concern is the safety, well-being and quality of life for the citizens of this county.
Again, my office has no involvement in the speed detection cameras being placed inside the City of Jackson and I will never support their usage.
My office and the City Of Jackson Police Department are already spending your tax dollars to provide deputies and/or officers at every school in the morning and afternoon to direct traffic. It’s my opinion these cameras are there for one reason, and that is to generate revenue.
As long as I am your Sheriff, the only citation you will receive from my office will be issued roadside, by a deputy that took an oath and is sworn to defend the Constitution and to protect and serve the people of this County, State and Country.
I hope this brings clarity to the citizens and you understand why I will not allow, nor support these cameras in the County.
