This past year, The French Bulldog took over Atlanta’s top spot in the American Kennel Club’s 2020 ranking of the most popular AKC-recognized dog breeds in the U.S.
The French Bulldog was also recognized as the No. 1 pup in Chicago and Dallas.
Although the Frenchie moved up to the top spot, Atlanta’s top five favorite breeds remain the same as last year. Last year the Dachshund rounded out the top 10 breeds, but this year fell two spots to 12th place. Although it fell out of the top ranks, it shows promise that it may return to the top 10 in the future.
“Atlanta remains loyal to the same top five breeds, but there are a couple of new fan favorites to keep an eye on.” said AKC Executive Secretary Gina DiNardo. “The Doberman rounds out the top 10 breeds this year, and the Rottweiler joins its working group companion in 7th place jumping five spots from last year.”

The AKC also announced its nationwide rankings today at the AKC Museum of the Dog in NYC. The Labrador Retriever celebrates a milestone! The loveable Lab remains the number one most popular breed in the United States for the 30th year.
While the Lab holds firmly to the top spot, the French Bulldog has continued to skyrocket in popularity. The Frenchie landed at number two in 2020, knocking the German Shepherd Dog down to third. The German Shepherd Dog had been the second most popular dog breed since 2009.
