DNA confirms remains found in March were missing 24-year-old Melanie Steele

SAVANNAH — A DNA analysis has determined that human remains discovered off of New Hampstead Parkway on March 18 are those of Melanie Steele, the Savannah Police Department says.

Steele was originally reported missing in September 2019. She was last seen in the 2100 block of California Avenue.

In January, Steele’s mother, Julia Johnson said she is constantly reminded of their last conversation over the phone that occurred the night she was last seen.

One of the last things Steele told her mother was that she loved her. Johnson said she clings to that conversation but wants to know what happened after that conversation that led to Steele’s disappearance.

Police say Steele’s death is still under investigation. Anyone with information on the case is asked to contact the Savannah Police Department’s Special Victims Unit at (912) 651-6742. Tips can also be forwarded to CrimeStoppers at (912) 234-2020. Tipsters remain anonymous and may qualify for a cash reward.
