Errors found on 11,911 absentee ballots mailed in Athens-Clarke County

Two errors were found on 11,911 ballots mailed to voters in Athens-Clarke County. The errors were both related to the race for the District Attorney of the Western Judicial Circuit.

The errors were as follows:

  • Brian Patterson was erroneously listed as an incumbent in the District Attorney’s race. Patterson is not the incumbent and should not have been listed as the incumbent on the ballot.
  • James Chafin was erroneously listed as an Independent in the District Attorney’s race. Chafin qualified as Non-Partisan and should not have been listed as an Independent on the ballot.

Elections officials say all subsequent ballots and electronic voting machines will not list an incumbent in the race for District Attorney and will not list Chafin as an Independent.

The absentee ballots with the errors will not be reissued, and voters who received those ballots should use those ballots to place their votes when voting absentee.

Voters who received the incorrect ballots will be notified by mail.
