LEESBURG — A 47-year-old Leesburg man is dead after being shot by a police officer. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says the man threatened deputies with a knife.

The incident occurred Sunday at about 2:30 p.m.

According to the GBI, preliminary information indicates that Lee County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a home on Linden Road in Leesburg to serve court mandated paperwork on 47-year-old Rodney Morrison.  Officials say Morrison threatened deputies with a knife as they attempted to serve the order and escaped from his home, running a short distance into a field where City of Leesburg officers arrived to assist.

According to the GBI, he was later shot by a Leesburg police officer and died at an area hospital.

No officers were injured in this incident.

The GBI will continue to conduct an independent investigation into the officer involved shooting.  Upon completion of the investigation, it will be turned over to the Southwestern Judicial Circuit for review.
