Walton County man dies trying to rescue pets from house fire

A 58-year-old who escaped a mobile home fire in Social Circle succumbed to the same fire after he re-entered the home to retrieve several pet dogs.

The blaze killed Adam Rogers, who was awakened by the smell of smoke at about 2:30 a.m. Friday. According to insurance dept. officials, Rogers alerted the other occupants of the house. All three men exited the home, but Rogers went back for their pets. When Rogers didn’t come back out, the other two occupants went in after him.

Rogers was air lifted to the Grady Burn Center in Atlanta where he later died. His two roommates survived the blaze, but sustained minor burns to their hands and feet.

“My investigator determined that the cause of the fire was the result of unattended stovetop cooking,” Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said. “The blaze destroyed the late model mobile home, and several dogs perished in the fire.”

According to Hudgens’ office, fire has claimed the lives of 63 Georgians so far in 2018.
