The nation awoke Monday morning to the shock of learning that former Secretary of State Colin Powell had died at 84-years-old. According to family members, Powell died of complications from COVID-19.
Having served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff during the Gulf War and Secretary of State during the presidency of George W. Bush, Powell was one of the most high profile and most recognizable figures on the national stage for more than two decades.
Below are some of the reactions to Powell’s death from your fellow Georgians.
“America has lost a remarkable public servant who was highly respected here at home and around the world. Our deepest condolences go to the Powell family and all who knew him.”
-Georgia Governor Brian Kemp
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of General Colin Powell. General Powell was a consummate statesman whose life work transcends any political entity. He was a warrior until the end, most recently imploring all Americans to get vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife Alma, their children and their families. The world has lost a hero.”
