Efforts to create a city out of four islands off the coast of Georgia have come to an end, at least for the remainder of this year.
In a joint statement by Georgia State Sen. Ben Watson and State Rep. Jesse Petrea, the lawmakers said after a thorough vetting of incorporation by residents of the islands, the measure did not gain popular support of the majority of residents.
“The citizens of these islands have expressed their objection to incorporation. Indeed, over 50 percent of the citizens of Oatland Island alone have expressed objection,” the lawmakers said in their statement.
The issue will not move forward in the 2020 legislative session.
