The Cherokee County School District has announced its plan for returning students to school in the fall.
Like other school systems in the state, Cherokee is offering parents the option of traditional in-person school or a digital learning model.
Parents must select a model for their children by July 17. For elementary school students this choice will be for the first nine weeks of school. For grades 6-12, the choice will remain in effect for the entire first semester.
The school system is planning to reopen schools Aug. 3.
Traditional schooling will have additional sanitation and cleaning protocols in place and will limit large group gatherings. The lunch schedule will be modified to reduce the number of students in the cafeteria at one time.
Masks will be encouraged for both staff and students and will be provided upon request or students can bring their own. School buses will undergo daily cleanings and regular sanitizing.
In the digital learning model, elementary school students will still have daily interaction with teachers and will have regular discussion and instruction via Microsoft Teams or Canvas video conferencing. The expectations, grading policies and deadlines will be the same as the in-person model.
Middle and high school students will have limited course offerings in the digital learning model, but will be able to use the state’s Georgia Virtual School program for courses that are not available through Cherokee’s APEX system.
