Gwinnett County Police have arrested a 28-year-old man suspected of robbing a motorist at gunpoint while the motorist was attempting to change a tire near the Buford Drive and I-985 ramp.

The Details: On September 20, a Gwinnett County officer working in the department’s Crime Suppression Detail was flagged down by a woman. She reported that her uncle had been robbed at gunpoint while changing a tire. According to police, the robbery occurred when a Hispanic man approached the victim, asking for a ride. After the motorist declined, the suspect placed a gun against the man’s lower back, forced him toward a tree line, and ordered him to the ground.

The suspect then took a bank envelope filled with a large amount of cash from the victim’s pocket and fled on foot.

Arrest and Recovery: Officers quickly responded, setting up a perimeter around the area. While patrolling the perimeter, another officer in the Crime Suppression Detail spotted a man walking near the scene of the robbery along I-985. Police detained the man, later identified as Johnny Roque, 28, of Sugar Hill.

Upon searching Roque, officers found a large sum of cash matching the amount reported stolen by the victim. Roque was arrested and taken to the Gwinnett County Jail without incident. The stolen cash was confirmed as belonging to the victim and returned to him.

Roque now faces charges in connection with the armed robbery.
