ATLANTA — Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is set to formally announce his pick for Georgia’s open Senate seat tomorrow at 10 a.m.

Yesterday, Kemp’s office told the Associated Press that Kemp had chosen Atlanta Dream co-owner Kelly Loeffler to fill the seat. This move is in stark contrast to President Donald Trump’s preference that Kemp appoint U.S. Rep. Doug Collins.

The appointment of Loeffler would be a shift for Kemp, who rode into the governorship on the heels of a Trump endorsement. His choice not to follow Trump’s recommendation shocked conservatives and political pundits.

Loeffler was a late entry in the state’s application process to fill the seat, but was considered to be a favorite of Kemp prior to making her application.
