Smyrna is gearing up for its Municipal Election on November 7. The candidates have qualified, and the city’s residents are eager to cast their votes for Mayor and City Council across the city’s seven wards.
In the Mayor’s race, three candidates are competing for the top spot: Alex Backry, who is retired; Ken Hymes, a Director of Product Management; and current mayor Derek Norton.
The City Council races are equally competitive, with candidates across various wards:
- In Ward 1, incumbent Glenn Pickens, a Project Manager, has qualified.
- Ward 2 will see incumbent Latonia P. Hines, an Attorney, on the ballot.
- Travis Lindley, a Business Owner and incumbent, is running in Ward 3.
- Ward 4 has two candidates: Michael Power, a Lobbyist, and incumbent Charles “Corkey” Welch, an Engineer.
- In Ward 5, Suz Kaprich, a Real Estate Agent, is running against incumbent Susan Wilkinson.
- Incumbent Tim Gould will continue representing Ward 6.
- Rickey N. Oglesby, JR., a Private Banker-Fiduciary, is the candidate for Ward 7.
Candidate qualifying is a vital step for anyone intending to run for public office. This process ensures that each individual meets the specific criteria required for the respective position, such as age and residency. It also allows their names to appear on the official ballot, giving residents the opportunity to vote for them.

The qualifying process concluded at 5 p.m. on August 24, with each candidate filing their “Notice of Candidacy & Affidavit” with the Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration.
With the candidates now set, Smyrna’s voters are preparing to make their choices in an election that will shape the city’s leadership and direction for the coming years.
