Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez pledging $100 million to help Maui rebuild

Some fires are still burning in Maui today.  

93 people are now confirmed dead after the devastating wildfires that engulfed homes and businesses across the island of Maui. It’s the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century.

FEMA has been dispatched to the island and rescuers continue to search for survivors. Hawaii’s governor said Saturday that hundreds of people are still missing.

Hawaiian airlines  (HA) – Get Free Report is offering $19 tickets to tourists and locals who are trying to get from Maui to Honolulu.

The Hawaiian community is pulling together to wrap their minds around who and what was lost, as well as recovery and rebuilding.

Amazon  (AMZN) – Get Free Report founder and billionaire Jeff Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez expressed their support for families in Maui through her Instagram. They are pledging $100 million to help the island recover.

“Jeff and I are creating a Maui Fund and are dedicating $100 million to help Maui get back on its feet now and over the coming years as the continuing needs reveal themselves,” she wrote.

Comments on the post are mixed, with support and appreciation from some, and others who point out that the billionaires net worth should yield a much higher contribution.

Bezos bought a compound on the south shore of Maui in 2021. The house cost an estimated $78 million, according to Architectural Digest.
