DECATUR — A Decatur man was found guilty Monday of shooting into a car, killing a 17-year-old girl and injuring her boyfriend, following a heated argument over their relationships.
Nakia Dorsey, 24, was convicted on charges of felony murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, and two counts of aggravated assault. The jury’s decision came after evidence showed a dispute arose between Dorsey and Brandon Wilson, 24, over their respective relationships with Jayne Salazar-Chavez.
Wilson, an Army serviceman, had returned home on Veteran’s Day weekend last year to surprise Salazar-Chavez. The surprise visit took a tragic turn when Wilson discovered a suggestive text on Salazar-Chavez’s phone from an unidentified number. After a brief call with the person, later identified as Dorsey, tensions escalated over who was Salazar-Chavez’s boyfriend.
The couple left Salazar-Chavez’s home, but upon their return around 11 p.m., Wilson noticed a red laser targeting his face. Moments later, a man in black clothing approached the car, brandishing a handgun equipped with a laser, and began firing. The car was hit with 20 bullets, injuring Wilson in the leg and fatally wounding Salazar-Chavez in the arm and torso.
Days after the tragic incident, an anonymous tip led investigators to Dorsey. Social media messages and cell phone location data linked Dorsey to Salazar-Chavez and placed him at her home prior to the shooting.
DeKalb Superior Court Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson sentenced Dorsey to a life sentence plus an additional 25 years to run consecutively.
