Canton man gets 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a disabled woman

The Gist: A Canton man, Troy Dean Hickman, 59, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually abusing and exploiting an intellectually disabled young woman over several years.

What Happened?: The abuse came to light in November 2022 when the victim confided in a friend. Hickman, a relative, had been committing the acts for years, starting when she was around 18. He frequently spent time alone with her and used threats to keep her silent. During the investigation, the Anna Crawford Children’s Center conducted a forensic interview, revealing the specifics of Hickman’s actions.

By The Numbers:

  • 2 counts of aggravated sexual battery.
  • 2 counts of exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult.
  • 20 years in prison, no parole.
  • Lifetime probation post-prison.

Why It Matters: The victim viewed Hickman as a father figure, prosecutors said. Hickman tried to use alcohol as an excuse and even insinuated the victim was partly at fault. This case highlights the vulnerability of disabled individuals and the importance of protecting them from exploitation.

What’s Next?: Hickman will serve his 20-year sentence without the possibility of parole. He’s also barred from contacting the victim or her family. Additionally, he must undergo a psycho-sexual evaluation, get treatment for substance abuse, and follow sex offender special conditions.
