Gas prices in Georgia keep on ticking up, like the summer heat that’s been cranking up thermometers across the state. As we begin this last week of July, drivers are finding they have to dig a little deeper into their pockets at the pump.
Today, Georgians are shelling out an average of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, an uptick of 19 cents just from a week ago. Looking back a month, that’s a jump of 33 cents, but compared to last year, we’re doing slightly better with prices being 23 cents lower.
Don’t get too excited though. To fill up a 15-gallon tank of regular gas, you’re going to need about $53.25. However, a small consolation is that it’s almost $4.00 cheaper than what it cost a year ago.
Why the increase? According to Montrae Waiters, a spokesperson for AAA, it’s a combination of climbing crude oil prices and refineries having to adjust their production due to the hot temperatures we’re seeing.
“The cost of oil accounts for more than 50% of what we pay at the pumps,” said Waiters. “Georgians may not catch a break regarding gas prices any time soon if crude oil continues to rise.”
Georgia isn’t alone in the rising price game. Nationally, the average for a gallon of regular gasoline went up by 16 cents since last Monday, landing at $3.75. The culprit seems to be the oil price, which has marched nearly $4 higher in the past week to hang around $80 per barrel.
If you’re filling up in Atlanta, you’re seeing some of the highest prices in the state at $3.59 per gallon. Savannah isn’t far behind with an average of $3.56 and Augusta-Aiken is at $3.53. For the cheapest gas, head to Albany where it’s $3.47 per gallon. You’ll also find lower prices in Rome at $3.46 and the Catoosa-Dade-Walker area at $3.45.
