Fulton County Sheriff joins voices urging peaceful protests once Tyre Nichols video is released
Pat Labat

Fulton County Sheriff Pat Labat has stated that the death of Tyre Nichols was a result of “inexcusable” and “appalling” excessive use of force by officers. In a statement, Labat said that as more information comes to light, it becomes clear that the actions of the officers were unjustified and inconsistent with any law enforcement training or procedures.

The statement also said that when the video of the incident is released, it will be difficult to watch and that cases like this must not only be condemned by the community but also by law enforcement leadership.

Labat said those who are sworn to protect and serve should be held to the highest standard.

The Sheriff also acknowledged that incidents like this can fracture public trust in law enforcement, but emphasized that the vast majority of officers are honorable and dedicated to serving their communities. He urged the public to remember that law enforcement is a noble profession and that when officers fail to uphold their oath, it harms the entire community.

Labat also expressed his condolences to Tyre’s family and the Memphis Police Department, and thanked Tyre’s mother for joining in the call for peace once the video is released. He assured residents that the goal of the Fulton County Sheriff’s office is always to protect and serve with proficiency, professionalism, integrity, compassion, and honor.
