Georgia crosses 15,000 mark for coronavirus cases

Georgia now has over 15,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus.

According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, as of 7 p.m. April 15, Georgia has 15,260 confirmed cases of COVID-19. There have been 3,006 hospitalizations from the virus, meaning if you are infected with COVID-19, there is a 19.7% chance you will be hospitalized.

576 people in Georgia have died from COVID-19.

So far, April 6 was Georgia’s deadliest day with 39 deaths reported in a 24-hour period.

While there have been more elderly people die from the virus in Georgia, the elderly are not in the majority in terms of being infected by the virus. According to the Department of Public Health, 61% of those who have been infected have been under age 60. In Georgia, the virus favors women to men — 54% of those infected have been women and 44% have been men.

More African Americans are dying from COVID-19 than any other race in Georgia, but more whites are being infected than any other race. Numbers about race have to be taken with a grain of salt though, because race and ethnicity are unknown in more than half of Georgia’s cases of COVID-19.

In terms of testing, 64,099 tests have been processed statewide.
