President Joe Biden announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, citing the need to focus solely on his current duties and the best interests of his party and the country.
In his letter, Biden mentioned the significant achievements of his administration, including economic recovery, healthcare expansion, and climate legislation. He expressed gratitude to the American people and Vice President Kamala Harris for their support and partnership.
Biden’s letter reads: “Over the past three and a half years, we have made great progress as a Nation… I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
This decision follows increased pressure from within the Democratic Party, with significant figures like Rep. Adam Schiff and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi advocating for Biden to step aside. Concerns about Biden’s age, health, and cognitive function have been major factors driving these calls. An Economist/YouGov poll revealed that 68% of Democrats who think Biden should drop out cite these concerns as the primary reason.
Additionally, Biden’s recent debate performances have intensified doubts about his ability to campaign effectively against Donald Trump. Despite his acknowledgment of these challenges, Biden remains committed to leading the country through the remainder of his term, emphasizing that there is nothing America can’t achieve when working together.
Biden has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him on the ballot.
