EVANS — An Evans Middle School teacher has been relieved of his duties and is being recommended for termination after allegations he had an inappropriate conversation with a former student on social media.

Evans Middle School officials say they were alerted by the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office that the allegations against a teacher were under investigation.

The teacher, Herndon Burns, is accused of having an inappropriate conversation with a student who no longer lives in the area over social media.

School officials say the matter will be reported to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission.

“The Columbia County School District does not condone nor does it tolerate inappropriate communication from any employee,” the school district said in a statement released Monday afternoon.

The district is reminding parents and students that suspicious behavior should be immediately reported to a school administrator or to the district’s anonymous Tip Hotline at 706-541-3600.
