FAIRBURN — Atlanta police shot and killed a suspect during an arrest attempt in Fairburn April 29.
The shooting occurred while officers were attempting to arrest 22-year-old Chase McDermott on an outstanding warrant issued in Fulton County. McDermott died at the scene. No officers were injured during the incident.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, preliminary information indicates that the Atlanta Police Department Fugitive Unit was at a home on Hania Drive in Fairburn at about noon on Friday to arrest McDermott.
Police say McDermott refused to exit the home and officers entered the home and found McDermott in an upstairs bathroom. During the incident, McDermott was shot by an officer.
Officers provided initial medical care and EMS personnel took over upon arrival, however, McDermott died at the scene. A handgun was recovered from the scene.
The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be turned over to the Fulton County District Attorney’s office for review.
This is the 43rd officer involved shooting the GBI has been requested to investigate in 2022.
