A 68-year-old Jefferson man died Thursday afternoon, after police say his car hydroplaned before striking a tree.

Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office and the Forsyth County Fire Department were dispatched to Browns Bridge Road near Little Mill Road in reference to a single vehicle crash. The driver of the 2007 Ford Crown Victoria was unresponsive when emergency crews arrived and was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Key Terms
Hydroplaning: Hydroplaning occurs when tire traction is reduced due to water on the road. The reduced traction causes the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The on-scene investigation revealed the 2007 Crown Victoria was traveling east on Browns Bridge Road towards Little Mill Road. The driver was in the process of passing slower traffic when he hydroplaned, lost control, and left the roadway. After the vehicle left the roadway, it rotated and struck a tree, then continued backwards and struck a larger tree.

According to Sheriff’s Department officials, there was no evidence of alcohol or drug impairment. The crash remains under investigation.
