Washington County Sheriff’s deputies stopped an alleged contraband drop near Washington State Prison on Wednesday morning, seizing drugs and other items intended for inmates.
The Details: A deputy on routine patrol near the prison in Davisboro saw a car stopped in the middle of the highway. After observing the vehicle, the deputy reported seeing a passenger toss a large trash bag out the window. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, initiating a short pursuit before law enforcement managed to stop the vehicle.
Inside, deputies reportedly found a large quantity of illegal drugs, including methamphetamine and marijuana, as well as other prohibited items they believe were intended for the prison.
Who Was Charged: Two Atlanta men, Byron Gearing, 45, and Demarcus Morgan, 27, were arrested on multiple felony charges.
• Byron Gearing faces charges including conspiracy to commit a felony, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, trafficking methamphetamine, and trading with inmates without consent of the warden.
• Demarcus Morgan faces several similar charges, as well as fleeing or attempting to elude police, speeding, reckless driving, and other traffic violations.
What’s Next: Sheriff Cochran said the Washington County Sheriff’s Office is committed to remaining vigilant against threats to public safety and security, especially when it comes to illegal activities involving state correctional facilities. The Sheriff’s Office stated its commitment to proactive policing to ensure safety in the community.
Both suspects are awaiting further legal proceedings.
