Cherokee Recreation and Parks will host the inaugural Live Like Laken 5K Run/Walk at Hobgood Park in Woodstock on October 26. The event, named after Laken Riley, a nursing student who was murdered on the UGA campus, will support The Laken Hope Foundation, which funds organizations promoting women’s safety, nursing education, and children’s healthcare.

“We are deeply honored that The Laken Hope Foundation has chosen Hobgood Park as the venue for the inaugural Live Like Laken 5K Run/Walk,” said Jay Worley, Director of Cherokee Recreation and Parks. “This event holds special meaning as we remember Laken Riley, whose passion for helping others continues to inspire us. It is our privilege to support such a heartfelt cause, and we hope this event brings our community together to raise awareness for the issues Laken cared so deeply about.”

Registration for the race begins at 7 a.m., with the race kicking off at 8 a.m. Registration fees are $35 until October 25, $40 on the day of the event, and $25 for virtual participants. Participants will receive a race packet that includes a T-shirt, running bib, and other items, while finishers will receive a running safety product. The race is a certified qualifier for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Peachtree Road Race.

The Laken Hope Foundation was founded in memory of Laken Riley, an Augusta University nursing student who was committed to helping others. “The phrase ‘Live Like Laken’ was inspired by Laken’s character and love for others. She would light up a room with her infectious smile and her sweet demeanor,” said Laken’s mother, Allyson Phillips. “Her faith in Jesus Christ guided her throughout her life, from mission trips in high school to her involvement with Woodstock City Church and Watkinsville Baptist Church during college. We deeply appreciate your support in continuing Laken’s mission and keeping hope alive.”
