The State of Emergency for Chatham County has been extended until Friday, October 4 as recovery efforts following Hurricane Helene remain underway. Commission Chairman Chester A. Ellis announced the extension to ensure the county continues to have access to necessary resources.
Office Closures and Employee Guidance
County offices will stay closed on Monday, September 30. Non-essential employees should reach out to their supervisors for further instructions, and county workers can call the Employee Disaster Line for updates. The Judicial Courthouse and Juvenile Court are also closed, with all court dockets rescheduled.
Recovery Progress
The county’s emergency teams have assessed damage across nearly 100,000 households, with many homes still without power. To assist residents, cooling and charging stations are operating throughout the area. Today, ice distribution points at Memorial Stadium and L. Scott Stell Park served over 3,000 vehicles, handing out more than 6,100 bags of ice.
Cooling and Charging Stations for Monday, September 30
Several locations will offer cooling, charging services, and essential supplies such as food and water. The hours of operation are as follows:
- Tybee YMCA (Showers available) – 5:30 AM to 9:00 PM
- The Empowerment Center – 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM
- Tompkins Regional Center – 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
- Compassion Christian Church – 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM
- Thunderbolt Fire Department – 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM
- Life Bridge Ministry – 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM
- Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum – 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Cooling and charging stations will also be available at First Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church and Savannah Tech – Eckberg Auditorium between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
Boil Water Notices
The Coastal Georgia Department of Public Health has issued boil water advisories for several areas, including Derrick, Heathcote, and Hunter’s Ridge. Full details can be found on the department’s website.

Approximately 70,293 homes in Chatham County are still without power. Residents are encouraged to monitor the Georgia Power Outage Map for restoration updates.
