CHATHAM COUNTY — After Tropical Storm Debby caused severe flooding along the Ogeechee River, residents in west Chatham County can find support at a newly established Resource Center at Compassion Christian Church.
Volunteers worked swiftly to prepare the space, which officially opened its doors on Tuesday afternoon to provide essential supplies to affected families.
The Details: The Resource Center, located in the church’s Adult Ministry Center, was set up to distribute water, food, and cleaning supplies to those impacted by the flooding. By the end of its first day, the center had already assisted 16 families and even one pet.
This effort was the result of collaboration between Chatham County and Compassion Christian Church. As the Ogeechee River began to flood last week, Chatham Emergency Management Agency reached out to the church for assistance. The church quickly responded, with its members donating nonperishables and bottled water during Sunday services. By Tuesday, those donations were ready for distribution.
“Disasters often bring out the best in people,” said Chelsea Sawyer, Emergency Preparedness Manager for Chatham County.
Carolyn Kixmiller, Executive Pastor of Spiritual Formation at Compassion Christian Church, emphasized the church’s commitment to helping others. “When people are hurting, that’s what Jesus would do: He would respond with compassion to people in need,” Kixmiller said.
What’s Next: The Resource Center will continue to operate on Thursday and Saturday to assist those impacted by the flooding. Residents of the affected areas can access services with proof of residence, regardless of whether they live within Chatham County.
Resource Center Schedule:
- Thursday: 7 a.m. – 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.
- Saturday: 4 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Location: Compassion Christian Church Adult Ministry Center, 50 Al Henderson Boulevard, Chatham County, GA.
