Macon residents can look forward to new lofts and improved public spaces as the city advances the DT Walton project.

On Tuesday, August 6, city commissioners approved the closure of an unnamed right-of-way that cuts through the City Hall parking lot, setting the stage for the development of 140 loft units and a parking deck intended to serve both downtown visitors and county employees.

The project is a key part of the Macon Action Plan, which aims to revitalize underutilized spaces in Downtown Macon.

Alex Morrison, Director of Planning and Public Spaces and Executive Director of the Urban Development Authority, emphasized the community benefits. “We’re taking existing government property and making it into something that will benefit the public,” Morrison said.

The Urban Development Authority is working to finalize an agreement for this project by the end of the month.

They plan to break ground within six months, with residents expected to start moving into the lofts by early 2027. This development is poised to be a significant milestone in Macon’s efforts to rejuvenate its downtown area, providing new housing options and enhanced amenities for the local community.
