A man is behind bars in Gwinnett County after a disturbing video surfaced online showing him hitting a three-year-old child. James Collins, 44, of Snellville, was arrested on August 10, following the viral spread of the video, which prompted a swift response from local law enforcement.
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, investigators were alerted to the video after it was shared thousands of times across social media.
The incident reportedly occurred at a Kroger located at 3050 Five Forks Trickum Road. Detectives reviewed surveillance footage from the store, confirming the details of the assault. They then located Collins at his home and arrested him shortly thereafter.
The child, who sustained minor injuries, is now in the care of family members. Authorities have also notified the Department of Family and Child Services to ensure the child’s welfare.
Collins is currently being held at the Gwinnett County Jail and faces charges of cruelty to children in the first degree.
