Thanks to a joint venture, local faith leaders and the DeKalb County Government are gearing up to hand out 5,000 book bags chock-full of school supplies and 5,000 boxes packed with fresh produce, chicken, and lunch box goodies.
The Gist: Getting ready for a new school year can be a steep hill to climb. This initiative aims to lessen the load for parents, ensuring their children return to school well-equipped and well-fed. “We are pleased to partner with our faith community to help parents prepare to send their children back to school,” says DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond.
What’s Happening?: From 9 a.m., distribution points across DeKalb will be abuzz, doling out see-through book bags filled to the brim with all the school essentials— everything from pencils and pens to flash drives and calculators. Alongside these, parents can pick up boxes loaded with Georgia-grown fruits and vegetables, eggs, and chicken hindquarters, and a selection of lunch box snacks like cereal, cookies, and juices.

- 5,000 book bags, each packed with a dozen pencils and pens, a ruler, 24 crayons, two types of notebooks, filler paper, three erasers, a flash drive, and a calculator.
- 5,000 food boxes filled with home-grown Georgia produce, chicken, and eggs.
- Plus, a smorgasbord of cereal, cookies, and juice to keep those lunch boxes stocked.
