Duluth police officer in critical condition after crash

DULUTH — A Duluth police officer was injured in a crash Saturday morning on Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in Gwinnett County.

According to the Duluth Police Department, the officer was taken to the hospital and is in critical, but stable condition.

Shortly after 4 a.m., a Duluth Police Officer was traveling northbound on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in his patrol vehicle. As he was traveling through the intersection with Abbotts Bridge Road on a green light, he was struck by a Ram 3500 traveling east.

According to the Gwinnett County Police, the other driver got out of his truck and fled the scene. 

Officers were able to catch the driver and placed him under arrest. According to police, 30-year-old Eduardo Gutierrez, of Americus,was transported to the Gwinnett County Jail and charged with DUI, Reckless Driving, Serious Injury by Vehicle (felony), Hit and Run (felony), Failure to Obey a Traffic Control Device, Valid License Required, and Seatbelt Required.
