Georgia Man Drowns Trying to Rescue Children in Macon

A man drowned while rescuing children at the Ocmulgee River Riverwalk on Friday afternoon. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Macon-Bibb County Fire Department, and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources responded to the scene following reports of a possible drowning.

Incident Details

Witnesses reported that a man and several children were swimming in the river when some of the children began to struggle. The man, later identified as 33-year-old Billy Scott Carter, swam out to assist the children, successfully bringing them to safety, but he then went missing. The incident was promptly reported to the Macon-Bibb E-911 Center.

The Macon-Bibb Fire Department launched a search and rescue operation, locating Carter shortly before 1:27 p.m. Despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Luanne Stone.

All the children involved were accounted for and unharmed.
