ROSWELL -- The City of Roswell will host a reception at City Hall Monday night to honor former City Councilman Marcelo Zapata.

ROSWELL — The City of Roswell will host a reception at City Hall Monday night to honor former City Councilman Marcelo Zapata.

The reception will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Monday. The event will take place in the Rotunda on the first floor of Roswell City Hall just before the city council open forum.

Zapata’s wife, who has power of attorney the former councilman, resigned on his behalf in June following a lengthy medical absence from council.

Zapata was granted the leave of absence for medical reasons on Jan. 24. The mayor and city council have not released any additional details about the leave of absence out of respect for Zapata and his family’s privacy.

At the time of his resignation, Roswell Mayor Kurt Wilson promised the city would formally recognize Zapata’s contributions to the city at a later date.

An election to fill Zapata’s post will be held Nov. 8.

The candidates running for the seat are:

Sarah Beeson, a small business executive who has lived in Roswell for 19 years.

Jason Miller, a small business owner who has lived in the city for two years.

Allen Sells, a finance professional who has lived in Roswell for 27 years.

Mulham Shbeib, a CFO who has lived in Roswell for 10 years.
