{"id":9564,"date":"2019-05-20T21:58:28","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T01:58:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=9564"},"modified":"2023-09-24T15:40:14","modified_gmt":"2023-09-24T19:40:14","slug":"atlanta-city-council-voices-unanimous-opposition-to-georgias-new-abortion-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/news\/atlanta-city-council-voices-unanimous-opposition-to-georgias-new-abortion-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Atlanta City Council voices unanimous opposition to Georgia&#8217;s new abortion law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Atlanta City Council unanimously approved a resolution Monday expressing the City\u2019s opposition to the stat&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/2019\/03\/29\/georgias-heartbeat-bill-heads-to-gov-brian-kemp-heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-it\/\">new abortion law<\/a>, which outlaws abortions as early as six weeks into pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councilmember Amir Farokhi, who introduced the legislation, said he believes the 13-0 vote is an important statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs the state\u2019s largest city, it\u2019s important that we join the chorus of Georgians speaking out for a woman\u2019s right to choose,\u201d Farokhi said. \u201cThe values represented in that bill are not those held by the majority of Atlantans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/2019\/03\/08\/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-georgias-heartbeat-bill-that-would-restrict-abortion\/\">Georgia<\/a>, similar legislation has passed in Alabama, Missouri, Mississippi, and Ohio in recent weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Farokhi said he believes that the new law, and other laws like it, are an affront to rights set forth in the Constitution and upheld by the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery woman has the right to choose,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s not a decision that the government or, frankly, men, have any business interfering with. No woman should live in fear of prison time or the death penalty for making a decision regarding her health. Likewise, doctors should not fear imprisonment for doing their job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"\/city\/Atlanta\"   title=\"Atlanta\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">Atlanta<\/a> City Council vote comes in the wake of recent statements by district attorneys from metro counties, including Fulton and DeKalb, that they would not prosecute pursuant to the state legislation.
