ATLANTA — For 16 seasons,\u00a0Kenny Leon\u2019s True Colors\u00a0Theatre Company\u00a0has created masterful works of\u00a0theatre art\u00a0that\u00a0honor\u00a0the\u00a0African American experience, lift up diverse voices,\u00a0and\u00a0create cultural understanding. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
To honor those who have championed the company\u2019s mission of celebrating the tradition of Black storytelling while giving voice to bold artists of all cultures, True Colors will host the second annual\u00a0True Colors Applauds Awards Brunch\u00a0on Saturday, June 1, 2019 at 11:00 AM at the\u00a0InterContinental Buckhead Atlanta Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Emceed by\u00a0Brenda Wood, the True Colors Applauds Awards Brunch program will include performances from our 2018 \u2013 2019 season, \u201cMoments Make the Movement,\u201d and the presentation of five awards to individuals and organizations that have positively impacted the arts community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Four of the awards are grounded in True Colors\u2019 core values of Boldness, Laughter, Abundance, and Respect, and a fifth award\u2014the\u00a0Jane Bishop National Theatre Award\u2014is named for True Colors\u2019 late Co-Founder, who illuminated the path that led to the creation of True Colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Phylicia Rashad<\/strong>, Actor and Director, will receive the Jane Bishop National Theatre Award, applauding her commitment to supporting arts and culture causes that uplift future generations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Georgia Justice Project<\/strong> is being recognized with the Boldness Award, applauding the company\u2019s outstanding work in supporting the cause of social justice in our community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Pearl Cleage<\/strong>, Atlanta-based author and playwright, will receive the Laughter Award, applauding her artistry and her work in the social justice field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Turner, now known as WarnerMedia<\/strong>, will be recognized with the Abundance Award, applauding the company\u2019s outstanding support of the arts community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Camille Russell Love<\/strong>, Executive Director of the City of Atlanta<\/a> Office of Cultural Affairs, will receive the Respect Award, applauding her exceptional work as an influencer in the arts community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In addition to celebrating the awardees, True Colors will also pay homage to Co-Founding Artistic Director,\u00a0Kenny Leon, who will become Artistic Director Emeritus next season, and celebrate the transition of Jamil Jude\u00a0from Associate Artistic Director to Artistic Director. True Colors announced Leon\u2019s departure from the company last fall. \u201cIt\u2019s time to engage a younger generation with fresh artistic leadership,\u201d said Leon regarding the transition. \u201cSince first meeting Jamil, I knew he was the right person to carry the torch for True Colors Theatre Company. Jamil is an inspiring artist and an empowering community leader.
