{"id":37890,"date":"2022-07-08T12:22:35","date_gmt":"2022-07-08T16:22:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=37890"},"modified":"2023-09-24T15:27:56","modified_gmt":"2023-09-24T19:27:56","slug":"21-killed-in-traffic-crashes-in-georgia-over-the-july-4th-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=37890","title":{"rendered":"21 killed in traffic crashes in Georgia over the July 4th weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>According to the Georgia State Patrol, 21 people died in <a href=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/2022\/06\/30\/yearly-reminder-be-careful-on-georgias-roads-during-the-july-4th-weekend\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"37557\">traffic crashes<\/a> across Georgia during the Fourth of July weekend. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgia State Patrol troopers investigated 11 fatal traffic crashes and local law enforcement agencies investigated 10 fatal traffic crashes resulting in 21 deaths across Georgia during the 78-hour Independence Day holiday travel period. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The holiday period began Friday, July 1, at 6 p.m., and ended at 11:59 p.m., Monday, July 4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These crash statistics are preliminary findings and can change any time after the holiday travel period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to fatal crashes, GSP troopers investigated more than 390 traffic crashes statewide resulting in over 200 injuries. Troopers and Motor Carrier Compliance Division officers arrested more than 370 individuals for driving under the influence, while over 9,000 citations and 8,400 warnings were issued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, troopers and motor carrier officers issued 8,647 citations, 8,451 warnings, and made 321 DUI arrests.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/2022\/04\/29\/meet-georgias-newest-state-troopers\/\">State troopers<\/a>\u00a0also investigated 295 traffic crashes resulting in 171 injuries, and nine fatalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cImpaired driving is one of the leading contributing factors in the majority of fatal crashes troopers investigate during holiday travel periods,\u201d said Colonel Chris Wright, Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. \u201cWe cannot stress enough the importance for drivers to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, drive the posted speed limit, wear a seat belt, and don\u2019t drive distracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local law enforcement agencies reporting fatalities include the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"\/county\/Bartow\"   title=\"Bartow\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"657\">Bartow<\/a> County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Bibb County Sheriff\u2019s Office (2), Cherokee County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Cobb County Police Department, Columbus Police Department, Effingham County Sheriff\u2019s Office, Fitzgerald Police Department, Sandy Springs Police Department, and Whitfield County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2022 Independence Day Holiday Traffic Count<br>Friday, July 1, at 6 p.m. &#8211;
