Narrowed from a field of 148 products, the finalists will compete on April 21 at The Classic Center in <a href=\"\/tag\/Athens\">Athens<\/a> with an award ceremony to follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The contest is the state\u2019s proving ground for small, start-up food companies as well as established brands looking for recognition or new markets. This year\u2019s finalists represent all corners of the state and the best of Georgia\u2019s diverse culinary heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Flavor of Georgia competition is an opportunity for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/foodscience.caes.uga.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Department of Food Science and Technology<\/a>&nbsp;(FST) to make an impact with companies and individuals who are developing new products and new businesses \u2014 ultimately, these new products and businesses benefit not only those who are directly involved in them but also those who buy the products they sell,\u201d said FST Department Head and Professor&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caes.uga.edu\/about\/personnel\/person.html\/17448\/manpreet-singh.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Manpreet Singh<\/a>. \u201cWith a wealth of resources at their disposal through FST on the Athens and Griffin campuses, Flavor of Georgia competitors are able to develop flavorful, marketable and profitable products for consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Judges for the final round of the contest will include food brokers, grocery buyers and other food product experts. Entries are evaluated by category based on their Georgia theme, commercial appeal, taste, innovation and market potential. Contestants will provide samples to judges while pitching their products in a three-minute presentation. Winners will be named for each&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flavorofgeorgia.caes.uga.edu\/contest-categories.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">category<\/a>, the overall grand prize and a people\u2019s choice award, which will be chosen by event attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The 2022 Finalists<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s finalists are listed by company, product name and city within the 11 competition categories. Since 2007, more than 1,500 products have been entered into the contest, and participating businesses have experienced increased sales, business contacts, publicity and overall interest in their products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Past finalists report that participation in the contest boosts their annual sales by about 20% on average. Taking into account multiplier effects, it is estimated that increased sales from participating in Flavor of Georgia contribute to more than $5.6 million in annual revenue for the Georgia economy, according to a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/caed.uga.edu\/content\/dam\/caes-subsite\/caed\/publications\/center-reports\/2014-2019%20Flavor%20of%20Georgia%20Finalist%20Survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">follow-up survey<\/a>&nbsp;of previous finalists and winners from 2015-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNot only were these products sold in Georgia but sales have also been reported in all 49 other states,\u201d said&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.caes.uga.edu\/about\/personnel\/person.html\/11592\/sharon-p-kane.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sharon Kane<\/a>, study author and economist with the CAES&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/caed.uga.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Center of Agribusiness and &nbsp;Economic Development<\/a>. \u201cSignificant sales were reported throughout the southeast in Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina, Florida and South Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Flavor of Georgia food product contest is organized by the UGA CAES Department of Food Science and Technology with support from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/agr.georgia.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Georgia Department of Agriculture<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/georgiagrown.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Georgia Grown<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ga-agribusiness.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Georgia Agribusiness Council<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFlavor of Georgia is a showcase of all that the Department of Food Science and Technology does, from flavor profiling to extending the shelf life of a product and value addition of food products,\u201d Singh said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To learn more about the contest, including benefits and registration, visit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/flavorofgeorgia.caes.uga.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">flavorofgeorgia.caes.uga.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n[mailerlite_form form_id=9]\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Judges have selected 32 finalists to compete in the second and final round of the University of Georgia\u00a0College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences\u2019\u00a0annual\u00a0Flavor of Georgia food product contest.
