{"id":29026,"date":"2021-09-01T21:27:55","date_gmt":"2021-09-02T01:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=29026"},"modified":"2021-09-01T21:36:09","modified_gmt":"2021-09-02T01:36:09","slug":"school-officials-heartbroken-after-student-dies-from-covid-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=29026","title":{"rendered":"School officials &#8216;heartbroken&#8217; after student dies from COVID-19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>School officials in <a href=\"\/tag\/Floyd-County\">Floyd County<\/a> say they are &#8220;hearbroken&#8221; after a student died from COVID-19 earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The child who died was a student at Coosa High School, which runs from grades 8 through 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The loss of a child, at any time, under any circumstances, is a tragedy. We are heartbroken that <a href=\"\/2021\/08\/24\/georgia-national-guard-deployed-to-hospitals-as-covid-19-surges\/\" title=\"Georgia National Guard deployed to hospitals as COVID-19 surges\">COVID-19<\/a> has taken the life of a child,&#8221; said Floyd County Schools Superintendent Glenn White. &#8220;We extend our deepest sympathy to this child\u2019s family and all others who have lost a loved one to this virus.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Floyd County Schools will be closed to all students and staff through Labor Day, and school officials say they will be taking extra cleaning measures during the four-day weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, White says the <a href=\"\/2021\/08\/24\/georgia-schools-chief-shares-his-experience-being-hospitalized-with-covid-19\/\" title=\"Georgia schools chief shares his experience being hospitalized with COVID-19\">school system has partnered with Floyd Medical to make COVID-19<\/a> vaccinations even more convenient. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Floyd Medical will have the Pfizer <a href=\"\/2021\/08\/05\/were-tired-nurses-beg-georgians-to-get-vaccinated\/\" title=\"\u2018We\u2019re tired.\u2019 Nurses beg Georgians to get vaccinated\">vaccine<\/a> available to anyone ages 12 and up with a parent or guardian present at the Coosa High home football game versus Armuchee High on Friday. While the <a href=\"\/2021\/08\/10\/more-georgians-are-getting-vaccinated\/\" title=\"More Georgians are getting vaccinated\">vaccination<\/a> is encouraged by Floyd County Schools, it is not a requirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The school system is reminding parents to monitor their children for symptoms of COVID-19 and not to send children to school if they feel sick. School administrators will continue to follow Floyd County Schools\u2019 established procedures for contact tracing and quarantining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At this time White says there is no plan for any school closures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Georgia Department of Public Health, Floyd County has had 1,771 new coronavirus cases in the last two weeks.
