{"id":27928,"date":"2021-08-05T15:54:29","date_gmt":"2021-08-05T19:54:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=27928"},"modified":"2021-08-05T15:54:31","modified_gmt":"2021-08-05T19:54:31","slug":"15-states-show-support-for-georgias-election-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=27928","title":{"rendered":"15 states show support for Georgia&#8217;s election law"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost is leading 15 other state attorneys general in backing Georgia\u2019s effort to dismiss a federal lawsuit challenging the state\u2019s <a href=\"\/tag\/election-law\">new voter laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) sued Georgia, Georgia\u2019s secretary of state and other election officials in June, saying several provisions of the state\u2019s recent voting reform law blocks the right to vote for Georgians based on race.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DOJ took issue with the portions of the bill that ban government entities from sending unsolicited absentee ballot applications and fine civic organizations, churches and advocacy groups for sending them. It also opposes the <a href=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/2021\/02\/05\/georgia-republicans-want-to-shorten-the-time-you-have-to-request-an-absentee-ballot\/\">shortening of deadlines for absentee ballots<\/a> and out-of-precinct provisional ballots. The DOJ said the limitations on drop boxes and restrictions on food and water giveaways close to precincts or polling lines are discriminatory, as is a photocopy identification requirement in the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yost called the justice department\u2019s lawsuit baseless and political.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGeorgia actually expanded the time period in which all citizens may cast early ballots,\u201d Yost said. \u201cThe Biden Administration complaint has nothing to do with the law and everything to do with politics. This brief is a history lesson on what actual <a href=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/2020\/02\/27\/did-brian-kemp-mock-accusations-of-voter-suppression\/\">voter suppression<\/a> looked like \u2013&nbsp;and why Georgia\u2019s new law is nothing of the sort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yost also called the lawsuit an attempt by the federal government to take control of the details of states\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/2021\/03\/27\/election-law-fight-intensifies-after-georgia-lawmakers-arrest\/\">election laws<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis brief defends our right to govern ourselves.\u201d Yost said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Georgia\u2019s election changes have led to several lawsuits, along with backlash from Democrats, businesses and the entertainment industry.
