{"id":227166,"date":"2025-07-23T16:02:39","date_gmt":"2025-07-23T20:02:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=227166"},"modified":"2025-07-23T16:02:39","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T20:02:39","slug":"37-georgia-nursing-homes-could-shut-down-due-to-medicaid-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=227166","title":{"rendered":"37 Georgia Nursing Homes Could Shut Down Due to Medicaid Cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Cuts to Medicaid contained in President Donald Trump\u2019s new budget bill put 37 Georgia nursing homes at risk of closing, according to a study released by Brown University\u2019s School of Public Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office reported that the legislation, which the Republican-controlled Congress passed this month, will slash Medicaid by $1 trillion during the next 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill passed without a single Democratic vote in either the U.S. House of Representatives or Senate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seventy percent of Georgians living in nursing homes rely on Medicaid, Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., said Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a serious threat to the health and wellbeing of Georgia seniors,\u201d he said. \u201cGeorgia nursing homes are already struggling. \u2026 This law is going to deepen those challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study, requested by Senate Democrats, identified 579 nursing homes across the nation at risk of closing. It based those findings on nursing homes with 85% or more of their patients on Medicaid and those with occupancy rates of less than 80%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nursing homes in 30 Georgia counties appeared on the list. Seven counties have two nursing homes listed as at risk: Baldwin, <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"\/county\/Bibb\"   title=\"Bibb\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\"  data-wpil-monitor-id=\"1675\">Bibb<\/a>, Fulton, Hancock, Muscogee, Tattnall, and Wilcox.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The federal reductions will force states to pick up the slack, the study concluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSignificant cuts in Medicaid will force states to make decisions about which \u2018optional\u2019 Medicaid services they will continue to fund and how stringent Medicaid eligibility standards are to be set,\u201d according to the report. \u201cNursing home care is a mandatory benefit under Medicaid; therefore, all states would be required to continue offering it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congressional Democrats and a smattering of Republicans have called for revisiting the budget bill later this year to reverse some of the more damaging cuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c(Republicans) need to work with us to save nursing homes and hospitals across the country \u2026 to undo the damage that\u2019s already been done,\u201d Ossoff said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cuts to Medicaid contained in President Donald Trump\u2019s new budget bill put 37 Georgia nursing homes at risk of closing, according to a study released by Brown University\u2019s School of Public Health.
