A fiery proposal from Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene could soon rename a body of water familiar to every American. She’s introduced a bill to call the Gulf of Mexico the “Gulf of America.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What\u2019s Happening<\/strong>: Greene says the renaming effort is part of a broader move to assert U.S. dominance over the Gulf. \u201cIt\u2019s our gulf,\u201d Greene declared in her statement. \u201cThe rightful name is the Gulf of America, and it\u2019s what the entire world should refer to it as.\u201d She accused the Mexican government of allowing cartels to use the Gulf for illegal trafficking of \u201chumans, drugs, weapons, and God knows what else.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Who Made it Happen<\/strong>: The bill has 14 cosponsors, including Representatives Barry Moore of Alabama, Mary Miller of Illinois, and Randy Weber of Texas. Greene says her team acted quickly after former President Donald Trump proposed the idea. \u201cImmediately following President Trump\u2019s announcement, I directed my staff to get the bill drafted,\u201d Greene said. She submitted it with the support of the 14 lawmakers on the same day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why It Matters<\/strong> Greene argues the U.S. already bears the financial and military burden of maintaining security in the region. \u201cThe American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted,\u201d she stated. Greene also emphasized the role of U.S. armed forces in defending the Gulf from foreign threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n What\u2019s Next<\/strong>: The bill would require federal agencies to replace “Gulf of Mexico” with “Gulf of America” in maps and documents within 180 days of becoming law.
