{"id":204089,"date":"2024-08-23T14:43:09","date_gmt":"2024-08-23T18:43:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=204089"},"modified":"2024-08-23T14:43:14","modified_gmt":"2024-08-23T18:43:14","slug":"georgia-will-get-1-15-million-to-get-lead-out-of-school-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=204089","title":{"rendered":"Georgia Will Get $1.15 Million to Get Lead Out of School Water"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Georgia will receive $1.15 million in federal funds to help schools and child-care centers reduce lead in drinking water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Georgia funding is part of a $26 million allocation nationwide by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which will be used by 55 states, the District of Columbia and U.S. territories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe science is clear: There is no safe level of exposure to lead,\u201d said Bruno Pigott, the EPA\u2019s acting assistant administrator for water. \u201cThis $26 million will help protect our children from the harmful impacts of lead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EPA also is investing $15 billion to remove lead pipes and is helping local communities develop and put in place lead pipe replacement projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While children are especially susceptible to harm from lead, most states haven\u2019t done enough to safeguard their schools\u2019 water, according to an analysis by the Environment Georgia Research &amp; Policy Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor far too long, testing has been the main approach to lead in water,\u201d said Jennette Gayer, the center\u2019s director. \u201cYet, lead concentrations in water are so highly variable that even taps where no lead is detected can be highly hazardous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is crucial that Georgia officials use that (EPA) funding on actions that will actually get the lead out \u2013 such as installing filters and replacing old fountains with new water stations at school.\u201d<span style=\"color: rgb(32, 32, 32); background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0); font-size: 16px; margin: 0px;\"><br><\/span><p style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px; color: rgb(32, 32, 32); font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 16px; line-height: 150%; text-align: left; background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\"><\/p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Georgia will receive $1.15 million in federal funds to help schools and child-care centers reduce lead in drinking water.
