Gwinnett County Police arrested an armed robbery suspect who squared off with a Chick-fil-A employee during a bizarre early morning standoff on July 1. Authorities announced that 51-year-old Tommie Lee Williams was apprehended on July 31 with assistance from the U.S. Marshals and the Gwinnett County Sheriff\u2019s Department.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Officers responded to the Chick-fil-A located at 5075 Stone Mountain Highway around 4:30 a.m. on July 1, after the victim, a delivery driver for the fast-food chain, called 911 to report the attempted robbery. According to police, the suspect shattered a drive-thru window with a rock and entered the restaurant\u2019s kitchen, brandishing a handgun and demanding the delivery driver open the safe, claiming, \u201cYou\u2019re going to die if you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The delivery driver didn\u2019t know the safe\u2019s combination, and decided that fighting off an armed robber at 4:30 in the morning was a reasonable career move. Surveillance video captured the two men wrestling over the gun for several minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the physical altercation, the victim managed to remove the suspect\u2019s mask, exposing his face. After several intense minutes of grappling, the suspect fled through a rear exit, making his escape before police arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Detectives canvassed the area, eventually identifying a vehicle believed to belong to the suspect. The vehicle led them to Tommie Lee Williams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Williams faces an impressive array of charges, including armed robbery, aggravated assault, second-degree burglary, kidnapping, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and second-degree criminal damage to property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is no word yet on whether the suspect left with any waffle fries or nuggets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
