Gretchen Whitmer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A months-long investigation led to arrests and charges of several people from across Michigan this week. Thirteen individuals are accused of a litany of separate state and federal charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nessel filed 19 state felony charges against seven individuals known to be members or associated of the militia group, Wolverine Watchmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/ag\/BELLAR_COMPLAINT_10_7_20_material_support_gang_FF_Redacted_704546_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Paul Bellar<\/a><\/strong>, 21, of Milford:<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/ag\/FIX_COMPLAINT_10_7_20_material_support_FF_Redacted_704547_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Shawn Fix<\/strong><\/a>, 38, of Belleville<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/ag\/MOLITOR_COMPLAINT_10_7_20_material_support_FF_Redacted_704548_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Eric Molitor<\/strong><\/a>, 36, of Cadillac:<\/li><li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/ag\/NULL_michael_COMPLAINT_10_7_20_material_support_FF_Redacted_704551_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michael Null<\/a><\/strong>, 38, of Plainwell:<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/ag\/NULL_william_COMPLAINT_10_7_20_material_support_FF_Redacted_704552_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>William Null<\/strong><\/a>, 38, of Shelbyville<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/ag\/MUSICO_COMPLAINT_10_7_20_threat_gang_material_support_FF_Redacted_704550_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Pete Musico<\/strong><\/a>, 42, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/documents\/ag\/MORRISON_COMPLAINT_10_7_20_threat_gang_material_support_FF_Redacted_704549_7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Joseph Morrison<\/strong><\/a>, 42, who live together in Munith:<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Several members talked about murdering &#8216;tyrants&#8217; or &#8216;taking&#8217; a sitting governor,&#8221; the affidavit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2020\/10\/08\/fbi-affidavit-conspirators-kidnap-gov-remote-wisconsin-location\/5923989002\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>obtained<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;by the Detroit News said. &#8220;The group decided they needed to increase their numbers and encouraged each other to talk to their neighbors and spread their message.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Andrew Birge charged six individuals with separate, federal felony charges: Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris and Brandon Caserta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year, the FBI learned through social media that individuals were discussing the violent overthrow of several state governments and law enforcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FBI has paid one undercover informant $8,600 for expenses so far, and $14,800 to another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Croft and Fox agreed to \u201ctake violent action against multiple state governments that they believe are violating the U.S. Constitution.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere has been a disturbing increase in anti-government rhetoric and the re-emergence of groups that embrace extremist ideologies,\u201d Nessel said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese groups often seek to recruit new members by seizing on a moment of civil unrest and using it to advance their agenda of self-reliance and armed resistance. This is more than just political disagreement or passionate advocacy, some of these groups\u2019 mission is simply to create chaos and inflict harm upon others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The now-arrested suspects allegedly called on members to target home addresses of law enforcement officers; as well as threatened violence and attempted to instigate a civil war; planned and trained to attack the state Capitol building; and kidnap the governor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMichigan law enforcement officers are united in our commitment to rooting out terrorism in any form and we will take swift action against anyone seeking to cause violence or harm in our state,\u201d Col. Joe Gasper, director of the Michigan State Police said in a statement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The nature of this case is rather unprecedented, but it does send a very vivid reminder that while we may be in a period of discourse, possibly even divisiveness and fighting across the nation, law enforcement stands united.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one point, Fox said he needed &#8220;&#8216;200 men to storm the Capitol building in Lansing, Michigan, and take hostages, including the Governor,\u201d the affidavit said. \u201cFox explained they would try the Governor of Michigan for &#8216;treason,\u2019\u201d and said they would execute this plan before the Nov. 2020 election \u2013 in 27 days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The charges came after Facebook&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecentersquare.com\/michigan\/facebook-shuts-down-michigan-anti-quarantine-group\/article_1166bf1a-9555-11ea-a64e-376ade8b24e0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>removed<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;several anti-Whitmer Facebook groups in May after alleged threats against state officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey condemned the violent acts in a Thursday statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA threat against our Governor is a threat against us all. We condemn the actions of the group of individuals that plotted against Governor Whitmer and state government,\u201d Shirkey said. \u201cThese people are not patriots. There is no honor in their actions. They are criminals and traitors, and they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCitizens who care about government show their passion by voting. Only terrorists resort to violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph G. Lehman, president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, also issued a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The personal safety and security of Gov. Whitmer and her family is paramount,&#8221; Lehman wrote. &#8220;We condemn any effort to threaten or harm anyone, regardless of their background, stature, or politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While the governor and the Mackinac Center have both agreed and disagreed from time to time, we believe it is the duty of all Michiganders \u2013 and all Americans \u2013 to respect our officeholders and our peaceful political process.
