Food banks across Georgia say they\u2019re seeing a spike in demand from families amid the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They\u2019re also reporting an increase in child hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food bank officials spoke Tuesday in a virtual news conference about how the economic devastation and job loss caused by the pandemic have raised the demand for food. The conference was hosted by advocacy group Voices for Georgia\u2019s Children and the Georgia Food Bank Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAdequate food access is really at the core for children being able to thrive,\u2019\u2019 Erica Fener Sitkoff, executive director of the group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amy Breitmann, executive director of Augusta-based Golden Harvest Food Bank, said almost one in three children in her service area is dealing with hunger. The Augusta Dream Center, which also helps low-income families, said it has seen about a 50 percent increase in the number of children needing food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responding to the COVID-19 crisis, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has made rules for food stamps more flexible, along with other changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Food banks say they\u2019ve created drive-through pick-ups, grab-and-go meals for children, and lunch deliveries, as well as bolstering partnerships with schools and community organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A June report from Feeding America, a national hunger-relief organization, said an estimated 630,000 Georgia children experience food insecurity, which is defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The demand for food runs across rural, urban and suburban areas, food bank officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Gwinnett County, the rates of child food insecurity have doubled, said Kyle Waide, president and CEO of the Atlanta<\/a> Community Food Bank, which serves 29 counties. Communities of color have been disproportionately affected, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rev. Kenneth Alexander of Antioch Baptist Church North in Atlanta said the church has expanded the hours of its food bank. \u201cWe\u2019re still seeing an increase in need. We\u2019ve had to step up and do more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ann Adkisson of Forest Hills United Methodist Church in Macon, which runs a backpack food program for needy kids, said the number of children who are food insecure \u201chas almost doubled in our community.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018\u2018The need for food has increased dramatically,\u2019\u2019 said Kathy McCollum of Macon-based Middle Georgia Community Food Bank. The amount of food distributed \u201cis up 50 percent from the first quarter,\u2019\u2019 she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the demand for food has shown up in government programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The number of Georgia families receiving food stamps has increased 35 percent since the outset of the pandemic, said Tom Rawlings, the state DFCS director.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
