{"id":17160,"date":"2020-08-04T17:25:51","date_gmt":"2020-08-04T21:25:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=17160"},"modified":"2020-08-05T08:58:46","modified_gmt":"2020-08-05T12:58:46","slug":"cherokee-county-second-grader-tests-positive-for-coronavirus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/?p=17160","title":{"rendered":"Cherokee County second grader tests positive for coronavirus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On just the second day of school in Cherokee County, a student has tested positive for coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter to parents, Dr. Ashley Kennerly, principal of Sixes Elementary School said a student in second grade had tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who were deemed &#8220;close contacts&#8221; of the infected student received a personalized correspondence from the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impacted class has been closed immediately for 14 days and the class will participate in a remote learning program during the quarantine period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We continue to encourage all parents to temperature scan and monitor students closely for any sign of potential illness,&#8221; Kennerly said in the letter. &#8220;Students should remain at home if they are exhibiting any symptoms of COVID-19 including fever, new or persistent cough, headache, loss of taste or smell, fatigue and\/or stomach issues.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The announcement comes <a href=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/2020\/08\/04\/first-day-of-school-photos-in-georgia-go-viral\/\">on the same day photos spread throughout social media<\/a> showing high school students in Cherokee County posing for group photos and not practicing social distancing measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Tuesday, Georgia had 197,948 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 3,921 people had died from the virus.<ins><\/ins><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Cherokee County, there have been 2,976 cases and 57 deaths. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of Friday, the Cherokee County School District reported that nine staff members throughout the school system had tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kennerly&#8217;s letter to parents is below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/thegeorgiasun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_5124-791x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17161\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On just the second day of school in Cherokee County, a student has tested positive for coronavirus.
