17-year-old shot by Georgia deputy during stolen vehicle call

The GBI is investigating a shooting that occurred Tuesday night in Hancock County.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the preliminary investigation indicates a Hancock County Deputy responded to a stolen vehicle call on Shoals Road.

When the deputy arrived, he made contact with a 17-year-old from Sparta.  

According to the GBI, the teen began fighting with the deputy, at which time the deputy fired his service weapon and shot Lewis.   

Th 17-year-old was taken to Athens Regional Hospital in Athens for treatment. He is in stable condition. 

The GBI will conduct an independent investigation. Once complete, the case file will be given to the Ocmulgee District Attorney’s Office for review.
