Arrest made in killing of Statesboro woman

Law enforcement officers have arrested and charged 44-year-old man in the Friday killing of a Statesboro woman.

Lee Allen Mayhew was charged with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of firearm during the commission of crime, theft by taking motor vehicle, and burglary. 

According to the GBI, preliminary information shows that Bonnie Lanier Rushing was killed at her home located on Stilson Leefield Road in Statesboro in the afternoon hours of Oct. 23. Rushing was found dead at her home with a gunshot wound. Officers say it appears Rushing’s killer entered the residence and at some point had contact with her.

During the incident, Rushing’s car was stolen and subsequently tracked and located in Florida. Mayhew was arrested without incident in Florida by Florida law enforcement officers.

Mayhew is in custody and being held in Florida pending extradition to Georgia. Police say additional charges are pending.

There are no other known suspects or threats connected to this case still at large.
