Dunwoody is inviting residents to a forum about the 2020 census

DUNWOODY — The City of Dunwoody and the Atlanta Regional Census Center will hold a Census Community Forum at the Dunwoody Library on Tuesday, January 28 at 6:30 p.m. All are invited to attend this informational forum, which will begin with a presentation, followed by a question and answer session.

“Dunwoody has formed a Complete Count Committee, and we’re working with community leaders to help spread the word about the importance of participation,” said Dunwoody Communications Director Jennifer Boettcher. “This forum is designed to explain the process and address any concerns.”

The U.S. Constitution mandates a headcount every 10 years. The results of the Census are used to reapportion congressional and state legislative districts, distribute more than $675 billion in federal funds and forecast future transportation needs for communities. Businesses use Census data to decide where to invest and create jobs.

In mid-March, the U.S. Census will send a mailing to every residence, inviting one member of the household to complete a questionnaire. For the first time in 2020, questionnaires can be filled out online. They can also be completed by mail or by phone.

Census Day is April 1, 2020. This is the day the U.S. Census Bureau and communities like Dunwoody will make a big push to encourage people to fill out one questionnaire per household. Starting in May, Census takers will go door to door to count those who have not yet responded to the 2020 Census. Children are often undercounted because of shared custody. The Census counts everyone where they live and sleep most of the time. Newborns count, even if they are still in the hospital on April 1, 2020.

The Census is easy, important and secure. Federal law protects your Census response. The Census does not ask for full social security numbers, political affiliations, pin codes or pass codes. The information is not shared with immigration enforcement agencies or law enforcement agencies.
