Georgia sheriff arrested for elder abuse

ALMA — A Georgia sheriff has been arrested and charged with elder abuse after Georgia Bureau of Investigations officers say he assaulted a 75-year-old man outside the Bacon County Sheriff’s office last week.

On Wednesday, May 22, 2019, the Waycross Judicial Circuit District Attorney asked the GBI to investigate allegations that Bacon County Sheriff Mark Cothren assaulted 75-year-old John Daniel Meltoni n front of the Bacon County Sheriff’s Office. 

Cothren turned himself in to the Bacon County Jail without incident.

According to the GBI, Cothren has been charged with one count of elder abuse, one count of violation of oath of office and one count of battery.

The GBI investigation remains active and ongoing. Once complete, it will be provided to the Attorney General’s Office for prosecution.
